How To Repair Rust

Post by Calibra-Keith on Mon Aug 11, 2008 3:24 pm

Rust is the number one enemy of car bodywork. Superficial rust damage can be dealt with using an anti- rust primer and touch-up paint. But if a body panel has rusted right through, more drastic action is required.

You will need the following:

Fibreglass repair kit, filler, anti-rust primer, sander

Step 1:

Cut away all the damaged metal.

Step 2:

Sand it thoroughly and apply anti-rust primer to the bare metal.

Step 3:

Cut a piece of expanded metal from the repair kit to fit inside the hole.

Step 4:

Mix the resin and hardener according to the instructions.

Step 5:

Work the resin into a piece of fibre-glass mat, cut to cover the hole.

Step 6:

Press the mat onto the repair area - we're using a piece of cling film - and smooth it down.

Step 7:

When the resin has set, peel off the cling film.

Step 8:

Sand the fibreglass smooth.

Step 9:

Finish off with some fine filler before sanding again and painting.
